Edward “Eddie” Banks Mirmelstein, a beloved figure in Newport News, passed away on September 14, 2025, at the age of 81. He died peacefully at Warwick Forest’s Keswick Place, surrounded by family who cherished him deeply. Eddie lived his entire life in Newport News, where he was known for his unwavering spirit and dedication to his community.
Born to Dr. Samuel H. Mirmelstein and Grace Banks Mirmelstein, Eddie was a lifelong member of the Newport News Jewish community. He was an active congregant at Rodef Sholom Temple, where he contributed to various community events and initiatives. As a graduate of Newport News High School in 1962, Eddie maintained strong ties with his classmates, helping to organize annual reunions for many years.
Eddie faced significant health challenges during his youth, notably a serious strep infection that affected his kidneys. Despite these obstacles, he became part of the first graduating class from Christopher Newport College. His resilience shone through when, in 2003, his son, Jay Mirmelstein, selflessly donated a kidney to him, allowing Eddie to enjoy many more years of life.
Throughout his career, Eddie was a successful entrepreneur. He founded Eddy’s Fashion Outlet in the 1970s, which operated until the early 1990s, boasting multiple locations in Hampton and the Newport News area. In 1993, he established Fun Stuff, Inc., which grew into a leading business in the resort and tourism market with the help of his son. Eddie was known for his ability to forge strong relationships with customers and employees, many of whom became close friends.
Eddie’s warm personality was further reflected in his love for storytelling and humor. He enjoyed sharing jokes and making those around him smile, often delighting friends and family with sweet treats and his infectious laughter. His connections extended beyond business, creating a network of friends who will remember him fondly.
Eddie is survived by his daughter, Jody Mirmelstein Christensen, and her husband, Buddy Christensen; his son, Jay M. Mirmelstein; three grandsons, Cole, Blake, and Tyler Mirmelstein Christensen; his sister, Sandi Mirmelstein Levy, and her husband, Marshall Levy; three nephews; his companion, Sandy Pullen, along with her family; and numerous friends and extended family.
