Illinois sophomore guard Alan Griffin apologized Wednesday for stepping on the chest of Purdue’s Sasha Stefanovic the previous night.
As Stefanovic drove to the basket, he made a scooping shot as he fell to the court. On his way down, he inadvertently made contact with Griffin, knocking him off balance.
Griffin responded by stepping on Stefanovic’s chest as he turned to go down the court.
Griffin was ejected with 12:21 left in the first half of the game, which Illinois won 79-62.
“Alan’s unfortunate situation in no way, shape or form … we don’t condone any of that,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. “That’s not part of anything we’re trying to do in our program.”
Here is Griffin’s tweeted apology. It included: “Sasha was kind enough to allow me to meet him after the game to offer my apologies.”
There was no immediate word on potential further punishment.
Griffin averages 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game. He scored 16 in a victory over Purdue on Jan. 5.
