Boy, 13, Struck And Killed By SUV In South Chicago

Chicago News

CHICAGO (CBS) — A 13-year-old boy is dead after being struck by a vehicle in the South Chicago neighborhood Thursday evening.

The boy was struck in the crosswalk after grabbing a snack at the store. CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar spoke with a man who helped the boy just moments before the tragic accident.

It was around 6:20 p.m. when a 52-year-old driver was headed west on 83rd Street at Exchange Avenue in a sport-utility vehicle, and hit the boy in the crosswalk, police said.

The boy was rushed to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

“Heard the bang, seen the little boy fly, and then I heard a woman screaming,” said witness Jarvis Moody.

Moody had a chance encounter with the 13-year old just seconds before the teen was hit and killed.

“Kid was short some change and whatnot,” Moody said. “I wound up putting the change up there, paying my tab. I noticed he ran out the gas station.”

That was when Jarvis said he heard the collision.

The boy’s jacket was still on the pavement hours later. There was also a large amount of blood at the scene.

“The white truck that stopped is the one that hit him,” Moody said.

Police focused on a white Chevrolet SUV that was within the boundaries of the yellow crime scene tape.

Behind the wheel of the parked truck, we saw a woman who appeared to be explaining the accident to police.

“Just doing the right thing – the wrong place at the wrong time,” Moody said.

It was unclear late Thursday what led up to the accident.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
