RIVERTON — The Riverton/Tri-City boys soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first 20 minnutes and the Hawknadoes held off Pleasant Plains 2-1 in its Class 1A regional final.
Riverton advances to the Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional semifinals against Teutopolis, which defeated Newton 3-1.
Sacred Heart-Griffin also advanced to its home sectional with a 4-0 victory over North Mac in the Raymond Lincolnwood Regional. The Cyclones will face Alton Marquette in the other sectional semifinal on Tuesday. Marquette trounced Hillsboro 8-0.
Riverton’s first goal came eight minutes into the game when Seth Tavernor was fouled just inside the right side of the penalty box. Tavernor stepped up and put the Hawknadoes ahead 1-0.
In the 18th minute of the first half, Riverton struck again. Tavernor dribbled up the middle of the field, passed right to Brennan Smith, who centered a ball to Ty Romines, who put it home off his right foot from 12 yards out, sending Riverton into the half ahead 2-0.
Riverton goalkeeper Matt Martin allowed one score to Evan Saebeler unassisted to bring the Cardinals within one. Martin had six saves in the game, none more important than turning away a goal attempt with four minutes remaining.
