TAIPEI (Kyodo) — Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Tuesday that China’s efforts to isolate Taiwan in the international arena only undermines regional stability, urging like-minded countries to forge stronger ties with the self-ruled island.

Speaking at the third annual Yushan Forum in Taipei, Tsai said the Asia-Pacific region is faced with the difficult task of securing a safe, prosperous, sustainable world for future generations and no country can achieve this alone.

Tsai said Taiwan is willing and able to participate more actively in regional partnerships, and its intentions to make the world a better place would not be subject to political pressure or blocked by unilateral coercion.

“China’s efforts to isolate Taiwan have done nothing but hinder regional prosperity and stability,” she said, while urging the international community to stand with Taiwan and work with it to forge stronger partnerships in the years to come.

Tsai also met with foreign dignitaries attending the forum including former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, who said the global community must always confront evil and do what is right.

“And I would hope that any leader that represents Taiwan would join in that kind of global mission,” she said, adding that U.S. President Donald Trump would want good relations with whoever is elected as the island’s next president on Jan. 11.
