GREENWOOD, Ind. (WTHR) — The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed early Sunday they located a missing Greenwood teen in Chicago.
Monday, they said they have identified a person involved in her disappearance.
Valentina Lacava, 13, of Greenwood, was reported missing on June 21.
Investigators thought she was a runaway at that time.
Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess said Monday that Lacava is back in Johnson County after she walked into a Chicago Police Department precinct station over the weekend.
Detectives from Johnson County brought her back from Chicago and began to question her.
According to Burgess, on the drive back to Indiana, Lacava refused to answer any questions about where she had been or with whom.
Then Monday morning, Lacava told an investigator who specializes in child interviews about the person she said picked her up from a Watson Road address in June.
Burgess did not share the identity of that individual, but confirmed that Johnson County authorities are working on criminal charges.
“We are extremely happy that Valentina Lacava is returning to Johnson County safely,” Burgess said in a statement shared with news media.
