An Illinois man has been accused of hacking his 74-year-old mother to death with a sword before stuffing her body into a garbage can.

The body of Judith Krystyniak was found by a social worker and police officer after they spotted her hand sticking out of a bin in her living room on Monday afternoon after her son David let them in.

The 47-year-old, who has a history of mental illness, appeared in court yesterday charged with first-degree murder and has been held without bail.

Park Ridge Police Chief Frank Kaminski said that the pair were brought inside the home on Courtland Avenue, Park Ridge, near Chicago, by David after he said his mother was ‘sleeping’.

They immediately noticed a sword and a hammer, as well as the house being in disarray, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Police said that Krystyniak has admitted the stabbing.

He is currently being held without bail, and is due to appear in court on August 14.
